Charalampos AnastasakisCharalampos Anastasakis is a Senior Specialist in Lloyd's Register Piraeus Technical Support Office, authorised for the design appraisal of ballast water management plans and also having the responsibility for the technical support of ballast water management matters.

Charalampos holds a B.Eng. in Naval Architecture and M.Sc. in Marine Technology from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and joined Lloyd's Register back in 2006.


Joe Angelo, Deputy Managing Director, INTERTANKO

Joe Angelo PictureJoseph J. Angelo is currently the Deputy Managing Director for the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO).  He joined INTERTANKO in January 2005 when he became the Director of Regulatory Affairs and the Americas located in their Arlington, Virginia regional office. From January 2011 to July 2012, he was the Managing Director of INTERTANKO as part of a long term leadership succession plan.

Joe Angelo is a 1971 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. He began his career with the U.S. Coast Guard in 1977 and was assigned to various positions of greater responsibility until 1992, when he became a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES). In 1995 he became the first Coast Guard Director of Standards for Marine Safety, Security and Environmental Protection, a position he held until his retirement from the U.S. government in January 2005.

Since 1980, he has been a key negotiator and the head of numerous delegations for the U.S. to major maritime safety and environmental protection committee meetings and conferences at the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations concerned with international maritime affairs.

Joe Angelo has received two Presidential Distinguished Executive Service Awards, one from President Clinton in 1999 and the other from President Bush in 2004.  In addition, he was the recipient of the 2003 Chamber of Shipping of America�s RADM Halert C. Shepheard Award for Extraordinary Contributions to Merchant Marine Safety. He is also one of a few graduates of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy that have received two Outstanding Professional Achievement Awards from the USMMA Alumni Association, one in 1991 for his work at the US Coast Guard and the second in 2011 for his work at INTERTANKO.


Andreas Cappelen, Engineer, Environmental ProtectionDNV GL

Andreas CappelenAndreas Cappelen has studied in Norway and completed his Master of Science in 2012 on Water Engineering. He then joined DNV in Oslo.

Since the merger of DNV and GL, Andreas has been working in the Environmental Protection department in Oslo. He has been involved in the type approval and class safety assessment on many water ballast management systems.

Currently he works towards the type approval of ballast water treatment systems, supports the market on issues related to ballast water treatment and ballast water convention, reviews piping arrangements related to ballast water treatment as well as feasibility studies of  such systems.


Dino Cervetto, Director, Technical ServicesRINA Services SpA

dino cervettoDino Ettore Cervetto, is director of technical services for RINA Services S.p.A. He holds a degree as a structural engineer and joined the Italian classification society in 1983 and for six years worked in the R&D department focusing on structural reliability analyses, finite element structural analyses and offshore structures analyses. He subsequently joined the plan approval ship structure department, became its leader and became a member of Committee II-1 of International Ship Structures Congress (ISSC) a role he held until 1997 when he was appointed deputy head of structures section, involved in the approval of structural plans of ships and offshore structures

In this period he also worked as chairman of the IACS Working Party of strength, which, inter alia, developed new criteria for the structural assessment of bulk carriers.

He was also responsible of the structural group for the development of the new RINA Rules for the classification of ships, developed in cooperation with Bureau Veritas. 

He was also involved in the approval of Korean designs of oil tankers and responsible for the Group (RINA-Italian Navy-FINCANTIERI) in charge of the development of the RINA Structural Rules for Navy ships.

He subsequently became head of the structures section of RINA, before moving on to become technical manager of cargo ships, then manager of Plan Approval Services within the technical function of the marine division, before taking over as manager of the entire technical services sector. In 2013 he became director of technical services.


Debra DiCianna, Senior Environmental Solutions Engineer, ABS

DiCiannaDebra DiCianna currently serves as a Senior Environmental Solutions Engineer on the Operational and Environmental Performance team with ABS, an international marine and offshore classification society. In this role, she assists ABS members and clients in their efforts to comply with various environmental regulatory requirements such as ballast water, U.S. EPA Vessel General Permit, solid waste management, and sewage management.

Prior to joining ABS, Debra DiCianna supported the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Military Sealift Command in developing waste management solutions, assessing environmental compliance issues, and designing ship environmental systems. During her tenure with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Debra studied the design and performance of treatment technologies and developed water discharge regulations.


Debra DiCianna has Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.


Tor Atle Eiken, Head, Sales & Marketing, OceanSaver AS

Tor Atle Eiken newTor Atle Eiken is educated captain from Maritime University Vestfold Norway and he holds a degree from the Technical high school in Transport and Shipping at Bergen Maritime School.

Tor has been in the maritime environment all his professional life holding positions from deck officer onboard deep sea vessels via sales and corporate position in Colfax Corporation in USA to CCO (Chief Commercial Officer) today. Starting point of the maritime voyage started as officer for the Norwegian owner Bergesen DY onboard LPG tankers. After some years he started in sales & marketing and has held several positions inside Autronica and Allweiler in Norway, Germany, China and USA.

Since 2008 Tor has been head of sales & marketing inside OceanSaver, where general marketing, strategy and development of the sales and marketing department has been key focus in order to be able to take their market shares when the BWT market is opening.


Rasmus Fols�, CEO, DESMI Ocean Guard A/S

Rasmus FolseRasmus Fols� took up the position as CEO of DESMI Ocean Guard A/S 1�st of December 2011. Prior to this Rasmus was a member of the Board of DESMI Ocean Guard A/S, from 2009 to December 2011. DESMI Ocean Guard A/S markets type approved UV-based ballast water treatment systems that are optimized to meet the strict IMO and USCG requirements everywhere in the world, while at the same time matching the shipowner requirements.

Before joining DESMI Ocean Guard Rasmus worked with innovation in Maersk Maritime Technology where he was Head of Strategic R&D. It was in this position Rasmus first started working with ballast water treatment issues seen from the point of view of a shipowner, and in 2009 a joint research project resulted in the establishment of DESMI Ocean Guard A/S.

Prior to joining Maersk Rasmus held various positions at the Italian classification society RINA, where he over a period of 9 years worked with advanced sea-keeping analyses, fatigue damage assessments and rule development in IACS (International Association of Classification Societies).

Rasmus holds a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in naval architecture from the Technical University of Denmark.


Stamatis Fradelos, Principal Engineer, OEP Department, ABS

FradelosStamatis Fradelos is Principal Engineer in the Operational Environmental Performance (OEP) department of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The OEP department provides technical support on energy efficiency, vessel performance and environmental matters.

 Prior to joining ABS, Stamatis worked as a marine field surveyor and spent six years at Lloyd�s Register as a Plan Approval Surveyor.

Stamatis has a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (NTUA), a M.Sc. in Marine Technology and Science (NTUA) and a M.Sc. in Engineering - Economic Systems (NTUA, UoA, UoP).


Haris Giantzikis, Technical Manager, Arcadia Shipmanagement Co Ltd

haris giantzikisCharalampos (Haris) Giantzikis holds a High National Diploma (HND) in naval architecture, a Bachelors and a Master�s Degree in mechanical engineering.

He launched his career in 1979 as assistant superintendent engineer at A. Halcoussis. In 1986 he joined S. Lazaridis Marine Bureau as marine surveyor. Then, he worked as superintendent engineer at Tsakos Shipping, Piraeus (1987-1991) and as senior superintendent engineer at Seven Seas Maritime, UK (1991-2001). He was fleet manager at Marmaras Navigation (2001-2002) and technical manager at Tsakos Shipping (2002-2005). From 2005 to date he holds the position of technical manager at Arcadia Shipmanagement.

He is member of ABS European Technical Committee, Bureau Veritas Hellenic Marine Technical Committee, DNV GL Greek Technical Committee, Lloyd�s Register Hellenic Technical Committee, NKK Greek Technical Committee and a member of the MARTECMA council.


Stavros Hatzigrigoris, Managing Director, Maran Gas Maritime Inc
sh dnv photoStavros Hatzigrigoris is the current Managing Director of Maran Gas Maritime Inc., a position which he has held since 2003. For the years 1992 to 2012 he held the position of Managing Director of Maran Tankers Management Inc. Stavros joined Anangel Shipping Enterprises S.A. in 1981 as a Superintendent Engineer.

He holds a B.Sc. degree in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from University College London, an M.Sc. degree in Marine Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and has studied Management of Ship Operations in the University of Strathclyde. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers and has served as one of the SNAME International Vice Presidents. He is a member of the ABS Technical Committee, the Chairman of the DNV-GL Technical Committee and a member of the Greek Technical Committees of LRS, KR and CCS.


Vayia Hatziyianni, Project Team Leader, Minerva Marine Inc

has 17 years of vast experience in the maritime industry. She left from her position as a Senior Project Engineer from OSG (GR) Ship Management Ltd, in where she was working since 2006, to join Minerva Marine as Project Team Leader in April 2013. Prior to that and until 2006 she was in Stelmar Tankers (Management) ltd. Until today, she served in different capacities as Dry-docking, Repairs & Project Supervisor and Senior Project Engineer dealing mostly with regulatory compliance, major modifications & conversions and new building projects. Vayia Hatziyianni began her maritime career in 1997 as a consultant where she served until 2000.

She has had the following material published: �Contribution towards Determination of the Optimal Ship Speed, SNAME Symposium 2010� and �Technical issues for selection of ballast water system for an Aframax tanker, Global Industry Alliance for Ballast Water Management meeting, Istanbul 2011�.

Vayia Hatziyianni holds a Bachelor degree in Naval Architecture from the Technological Education Institute of Athens, a Postgraduate diploma in Manufacturing & Business Administration from Open University of UK and an Msc degree in the Marine Engineering & Technical Management from the University of Greenwich.


Maya Kaur, Engineer, Environmental Protection, DNV GL

Maya Kaur completed her Master of Science in Chemical Engineering in 2012 at NTNU, Norway. She then joined DNV in Oslo and worked with approval of piping systems, mainly ballast systems with ballast water management systems.

Since the merger of DNV and GL, Maya has been working in the Environmental Protection section in Oslo. In this section, Maya has also been involved in type approvals, and class safety assessment on many water ballast management systems, as well as approval of other marine pollution prevention equipment. 

Currently, she works towards plan approval related to installations of ballast water management systems on new and existing ships, development of DNV GL Rules and Guidelines for BWM, as well as managing USCG and IMO type approval of ballast water management systems.



John Kokarakis, VP Technology & Business Development Marine & Offshore Div, Bureau Veritas

, a 1979 graduate of National Technical University of Athens, holds PhD (1986) and Master�s degrees in Naval Architecture (1983) and Master�s in Mechanical Engineering (1984) from the University of Michigan. He worked for over ten years as a consultant undertaking technical problems worldwide.

His specialization was in the area of technical investigation and analysis of marine accidents.

In that capacity he participated in the technical investigation of the Exxon Valdez grounding, capsize of drillship Seacrest, Piper Alpha fire and explosion, Aleutian Enterprise foundering in Alaska as well as many other accidents of less notoriety.

The last fourteen years he works in Greece, in the area of classification. He has served at American Bureau of Shipping and Germanischer Lloyd. He worked in plan approval, rule development and implementation of environmental regulations.

He is currently Vice President of Technology and Business Development of Marine Hellenic, Black Sea & Middle East Zone at Bureau Veritas. In his duties Dr. Kokarakis is responsible for the smooth technical operation in the Zone as well as in the harmonic cooperation with the BV offices worldwide to the benefit of the BV clients.


Andreas Kokkotos, Managing Partner, Argo Navis Marine Consulting & Engineering Ltd

A.KOKKOTOS FOTOAndreas Kokkotos, co-founder of ARGO NAVIS Ltd., graduated from the National Technical University of Athens (School of Mechanical Engineering). From 1998 until 2005 he has worked as a superintendent engineer in two (2) Greek ship owning companies, with fleets of tankers and chemical carriers and participated on-site new-building supervision in two (2) tankers new-building projects in Croatia for Greek ship-owners.

From 2006 until 2008 he worked as an independent Engineer conducting pre-purchase, vessel condition and damage surveys, and new buildings sea trials supervision. He participated in tanker single to double hull conversion studies and plan approvals of various types of vessels.

Since 2011, together with the � continuous expanding � Argo Navis team, has devoted many man-hours on investigating BWTS� technologies and their installation on board various types of ships. 


Panagiotis Koutris , Managing Director, Kristen Marine SA, Roxana Shipping SA

Koutris TakisPanagiotis Koutris, Naval Architect & Marine and Mechanical Engineer M.Sc, was born in 1957 in Athens.
In October 1980 he graduated from National Technical University of Athens, where he studied Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering.

After his graduation he was employed in Alfa Laval (1983-1984) and then in Avin International SA (1984-2000) and Athenian Tankers (2000-2001).  Since then he is Managing Director in Kristen Marine SA � Roxana Shipping SA for a fleet of 25 tankers and bulkers.

Before joining Knutsen in 1998, he worked in Norsk Hydro - Oil and Gas division for seven years, and in Statoil � operation and various projects for ten years.

Tom Perlich has over 30 years of experience in a wide range of water treatment applications.

Prior to founding Ecochlor, he was a sales executive for Vulcan Performance Chemicals, a leading provider of process and functional chemicals.

Earlier he held sales and engineering positions with Exxon Chemicals and Nalco Chemicals. He holds a BSIE from Rochester Institute of Technology.

January 2010-December 2011: Alfa Laval Greece as Marine Equipment and Parts & Service Manager. Head also of the industrial after sales part of Alfa Laval Greece and the service department. Organisation that has anticipated the crisis in the territory of Greece and maintained the result in the levels of 2008.


January 2009-December 2009: Alfa Laval Greece as M&D Sales Manager. Additional task & responsibility was the SRM function of capital sales (MMD). SRM function represents all these actions that influence Greek shipowners to select Alfa Laval equipment in their new buildings in Far East.

Integration project of Adriatic region reorganising sales and service functions in Italy, Former Yugoslavia countries and Greece in marine & power division. Main objectives were the establishment also of sales organization in Slovenia through subsidiary company, distributors (Serbia) and service providers (Croatia).

June 1999 � Dec 2003: Alfa Laval Greece, as Upgrading Equipment Manager. Project engineering, quotations, sales, technical advising, commissioning, start up and service responsible Manager on several equipment and systems in the marine, power and industry division. Participation on the corporate planning and the marketing of the department.


Panos Smyroglou, Chief Commercial Officer, Coldharbour Marine Limited

Panos SmyroglouPanos Smyroglou graduated from Glasgow University with a B.Eng. in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering and from Southampton University with an MSc. in Naval Architecture. On returning to his native Greece in 1996, he began his career as a surveyor and supervisor of ship repairs & conversions and moved on to the business development management of major marine concerns in 1998. For the next 10 years he gained valuable experience in marine consultancy while representing renowned players in the marine sector as the Commercial Manager of the oldest marine technical office in Greece.

In 2007 Panos established his own consultancy firm and commenced his active involvement with the Ballast Water Treatment sector in 2008 by close collaboration with Coldharbour.

With almost two decades of rich experience Panos became Coldharbour's CCO in 2014. He guides shipowners towards achieving a successful BWT selection and installation, while respecting vessel's smooth operation by using Coldharbour's technology that is uniquely suited to large vessels.


Konstantinos Stampedakis, Co-Founder & Managing Director, ERMA FIRST SA

stampedakisKonstantinos Stampedakis holds a BEng in Chemical and Process Engineering and an MSc in Water and Wastewater Treatment from the University of Surrey, UK. 

He serves the maritime sector for more than 10 years as developer of Marine Environment Pollution Prevention equipment. He is the R&D Manager of EPE SA since 2007, where he has developed several products including bilge water separators, sewage treatment plants and fresh water generators for the marine industry.

From 2009 onwards he acts as Managing Director of ERMA FIRST, being actively engaged in the R&D certification and engineering of ERMA FIRST BWTS. 


Masahiro Teranishi, Deputy GM, Overseas Sales & Marketing, BWMS Division, JFE Engineering

Masahiro TeranishiMasahiro Teranishi joined JFE in 1993 after having finished his bachelor degree in faculty of human sciences at the Osaka University. Following 12 years he had been working for the product support and marketing department of steel structure construction division.

From 2005 to 2007, he had been working for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan as an administrative officer on Port and Harbour.  After returning to JFE, in 2009 he moved to Ballast Water Management System Division to build up BWMS business and contributed to achieve JFE's successful share in Japanese market. He now leads the overseas sales & marketing of JFE BallastAce.


Dimitris Tsoulos, Regional Sales Manager, Products & Systems, Electrocatalytic (an Evoqua brand)

tsoulosDimitris Tsoulos is the Regional Sales Manager for Electrocatalytic (an Evoqua brand) Products and Systems. Located in Athens Greece, he is responsible for the territories of Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and the Balkans. Tsoulos, is also acting as the Managing Director of the Evoqua Water Technologies Greek Branch. He combines a strong technical know-how with a solid business background and proven work experience. Tsoulos holds a Batchelor in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Science in Electrical Power Engineering and Management.

Dimitris Tsoulos, as a Project Engineer and then as a certified Project Manager in Siemens, was responsible for a number of Electrotechnical projects in naval and commercial maritime industry between 2001 and 2004. Since 2005 he was leading the Water Technologies Business Unit of Siemens in Greece and since 2010 was a member of the core Ballast Water Management System global development and sales team. After the successful Water Technologies Business unit divestment from Siemens in 2012 and establishment of Evoqua WT, he is responsible for the Electocatalytic Products, Systems and Services for the regional Oil & Gas, Power and Marine market, but focusing on the Ballast Water Management System initiative.
